(think Kylie Minogue's 1994 album. where's MOONBEAM? ) anyway...i guess what i'm trying to say is that while everyone was praising Ray Of Light, and deservingly so, i think she hit that mark several years prior with those two releases.
The Erotica and BS album was really the era that I got into Madonna, so i have very fond memories of both. For me Erotica is the stronger of the two simply because its a borderline concept album, and the limited number of producers helps mould a very distinctive sound. Tracks such as Deeper & Deeper, Waiting, Rain & Bad Girl are as good as anything she's ever done. For a time i was in love with that album so much, however I have to say i dont think it plays very strongly now. Tracks such as Secret, Sanctuary, Forbidden Love & Take A bow are beautiful, however having heard the other 4-5 songs from the same sessions / period I really do think she chose the wrong tracklisting. She's said herself she did that much work, and worked with that many producers on that album, that she had a really hard time threading it all together cohesively, and i think thats really the albums downfall for me. After 1990 she really took major strides to be taken seriously as an artist, and move away from the obvious pop music that was Like A Prayer. She was still pop, but she wanted to do it differently, and i think these two albums were the initial steps she made to get onto that road, the one where she had creative freedom. erotica and BS got slated because people didnt want that from madonna, coupled with the whole Sex thing, and the changing sound of the US music market, madonna seemed lost. Ray Of Light was a major album for her because it ensured her legacy had a new chapter (or seven), and also ensured her that creative freedom she'd persued with Erotica & BS. Ray Of Light is a better album because it has better songs, and strictly one producer, it couldnt have been made however without the other two.

Ray Of Light is a better album because it has better songs, and strictly one producer, it couldnt have been made however without the other two. i think with Erotica she started moving away from being a singles artists, meaning an artists who puts out an album with a few hits and some good album tracks and a few clunkers, to an album artist. where the songs started to fit a theme and just play well together. part of the reason GHV2 sucked was they didn't rework the songs to make them fit together. Sone of Confessions may not stand on it's own but as it album is it stellar. that's why i'm not going to worry about singles charts. the album will do fine. Madonna on course for 11th UK number one
Posted: 09 November 2005 From the Daily Star: Madonna will storm to the top of the charts with Hung Up. Selling twice as many copies as the No.2 act so far this week, Madge's Abba-sampling dancefloor filler is well worthy of the top spot. From musicweek.co.uk: Madonna is on course for an 11th number one single this weekend, after retail reports suggest that new single Hung Up (Warner Bros) is comfortably outselling the current chart-topper, Westlife's Face To Face. It is the singer's 62nd release, and comes some 21 years after she emerged in the UK with debut hit Holiday. From www.drownedmadonna.com:
Drowned Madonna keeps on revealing details on the Promotional Tour for "Confessions on a Dance Floor". The set for KoKo and G-A-Y will be minimal, because they are very small venues. There will be video screens but otherwise really simple. NO huge mirror ball. Jamie King is working on the choreography. Dancers will be dressed in some shade of purple or 1978 clothing, while the band in white suits with purple shirts. We remind you that there won't be background singers. Well... If you haven't realized it yet, Madonna's new favorite color is PURPLE... Even the guitar amps will be PURPLE on her next world tour. Madonna thanks Spike Stent, Alex Dromgoole, P Dub, Mirwais, Bloodhsy & Avant, Anders, ABBA, Monte Pittman, Joe Henry and Yitznak Sinwani in her new album credits "for being part of this collaboration and helping to make it all happen".
She also thanks Liz Rosenberg, Shari Goldsmith, David Toraya and Michael Goldsmith "for oiling the machine", and her managers Guy Oseary and Angela Becker "for the creative and emotional support". Madonna also adds extra special thanks to The Thin White Duke aka Stuart Price "without you this record never would have happened". By Sarah Rodman Friday, November 11, 2005 Confessions on the Dance Floor (Warner Bros.) It’s not clear what Madonna is “confessing” on her deliriously danceable new album, but you’ll be too busy working up a sweat to care. This is the workout disc of the year. The former Material Girl, with help from producer/DJ Stuart Price, transforms into total Mirrorball Mama on her 13th release, and the joy she feels inhabiting these infectious rhythms translates loud and clear. Of course Madonna has encouraged getting into the groove since her first single, 1982’s “Everybody.” But “Confessions” delves into pure disco in such an ecstatic fashion - echoing everyone from Donna Summer to the Pet Shop Boys to her own earlier incarnations - that it’s easy to get swept away. Gone are the social commentaries on materialism and unfortunate raps about soy lattes heard on 2003’s “American Life.” In their place are variations on the time-tested theme of love set to sounds that move from sultry to cool to funky. She’s looking for it on the stuttering “Get Together” and the jittery, throbbing “Future Lovers.” She’s giving it to the Big Apple in the tympani-laced and funny “I Love New York.” She’s dismissing someone who doesn’t give her it on the candy-coated first single “Hung Up.” And with the shimmery, icy contours and processed vocals of “Forbidden Love,” she might be pondering the future difficulties of mating with robots. Contemplating her legacy on “How High,” she wonders “Should I carry on?” “Confessions”, in all its carefree glory, makes the answer an unqualified yes.Download: “Jump”
